Welcome to Ghana Commodity Exchange

The Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) is a regulated national and regional electronic marketplace designed to link buyers and sellers of agricultural and non-agricultural products. Established in 2018, GCX operates as a private company limited by shares and is structured as a Public-Private Partnership, with the Government of Ghana currently serving as the sole shareholder.

The Exchange provides comprehensive, technology-driven trading solutions to modernize Ghana’s agricultural value chain:

  • Electronic Trading Platform: A secure, automated system that facilitates transparent price discovery. It allows farmers, cooperatives, brokers, and merchants to trade spot contracts (with plans for futures and options) in a regulated environment.

  • Certified Warehouse Operations: GCX operates secure warehouses nationwide equipped to receive, clean, dry, grade, re-bag, weigh, and store grains safely. An electronic Warehouse Receipt System (e-WRS) links this storage directly to the trading floor.

  • Guaranteed Settlement: Working with partner banks and the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), GCX guarantees prompt T+1 trade settlements—meaning sellers are paid and buyers receive full delivery within 24 hours of a trade.

  • Quality & Safety Assurance: The Exchange enforces rigorous grading standards and guarantees product safety against contamination, ensuring that commodities meet the nutritional needs of the public and the quality demands of commercial buyers.

GCX’s core mission is to transform Ghana’s economy by creating prosperity across commodity value chains, ultimately establishing the country as a regional and global trading hub. By integrating smallholder farmers into formal agricultural and financial markets, GCX helps them bypass exploitative middlemen, secure fair, competitive prices, and gain access to aggregation and collateral financing. Currently, the Exchange facilitates the trading of vital commodities including white and yellow maize, milled rice, soybeans, sorghum, and sesame.
